Le calcul mental est propice au calcul automatisé et au calcul réfléchi :

-Le calcul réfléchi : stratégies d'un élève qui ne possède pas encore d'automatismes pour calculer

-> Décomposition canonique :

19 +28 = (10 +9) +(20 +8) =30 +(9 +8) = 47

-> Complément à la dizaine

19 + 28 = 19 +(1 +27) =20 +27 = 47

-> Calcul par colonne

1 + 2 = 3 / 9 + 8= 17 donc 3 dizaines et 17 unités donc 47

-Le calcul automatisé :

-> Procédures reproductives : 6 +8 = 14 (calcul réflexe)

-> Procédures reconstructives : surcomptage, calcul avec les doigts ...
