Ce matin c'était un texte sur le travail des enfants en Haïti et Saint Dominique.

A year of expanded horizons

One of the best ways your child can prepare for going to university is to take time off. A gap year is a chance for a change of space and to do something challenging and inspirational. Wathever a "gapper" chooses to do, wether it is travelling the world, volunteering abroad, learning a new skill or getting a job, it will be worth it for the life experience.

After a gap year students are more self-confident, motivated, knowledgeable and independent. If properly planned, a year out can say as much, if not more, about an individual than any set of exam results. It also looks good on the CV. Far from being considered a waste of time, many employers now prefer candidates who have had the chance to mature during a gap year.

Approximately 200,000 young people aged 18 to 25 will do just that this year. Jamie Davies, a business studies student at the University of the West of England, travelled around Australia for ten months. "It was the most phenomenal experience," he says. "I learnt so much about how to get by on my own ; it was an incredible shock to the system after living at home with mum".

Ollie Edwards, 20, went to Bishop Wordsworth School in salisbury and got three A-levels in maths, physics and economics. He took a gap year in Nepal."I hadn't thought about doing a gap year until my last year at school when we had a talk from a group of university students who had all done voluntary work abroad on a gap yaer. One of the students had been to Nepal with Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW) and I was so inspired that I got the application form immediatly. I decided to go to Nepal to work on their environment programme, wich is all about raising standards of living in the villages.

I worked for six months in a supermarket, wrote a good sponsorship letter, saved hard and then flew with a group of 16 voluntareers to Kathmandu. When then started work on our environment programme ; teaching the locals how to buid smokeless stoves, pit latrines and teaching lessons about hygiene to help cut down disease.

We lived and worked with Nepali volunteers and learnt an incredible amount about each other. My gap yar had such a profound impact on me that I decided to change from doing a degree in ingeneering to politics and sociology."

Comme j'avais parlé de mon expérience ils m'ont demandé auquel je m'identifierai , quand j'étais parti et ce que ça m'avait apporté.

Faut savoir que normalement on doit rendre notre sujet et jeter notre brouillon à la poubelle. J'ai pu garder le mien car j'en avais 2 sur ma table et je l'ai ... subtilisée pour vous en faire part.

Moi, je l'ai passé lundi matin à Pau. Sujet sur le travail des enfants haïtiens. Les examinatrices étaient 2 femmes souriantes. Ma présentation a été très courte. Elles m'on posé ensuite des questions sur le texte puis sur ma préparation au concours, pourquoi je veux devenir enseignante ... Elles ont rapidement été à cours de questions mais elles tenu à aller jusqu'aux 20 minutes. Ca a fini par : "Qu'est-ce que vous allez faire pendant les vacances ?"
