Milla Posté(e) 30 mars 2006 Posté(e) 30 mars 2006 Hi everyone here is my summary for "Oliver Twist" In an unknowed time and place but where people suffered from high poverty, a child was born, in this world of pain, in a workhouse, and tried to survive to his very first moments. Oliver Twist, because we talk about him, borned in an hostile world to compare to a house where a child is waiting for by all his family as a precious gift. But because of that, because of that parish surgeon and his partner, an old and drunk woman, Oliver understood instinctively that he had to fight against himself and nature to live. He breathed and everyone in that workhouse could hear his long cry of a newborn which meaned that he were here, alive. His mother so weak, so pale, asked for seeing her child and knew that it would be her first and last wish before she died. This story take place in the 19th century, Oliver Twist is a child, an orphan who after having suffered from bad treatments, ran away to London. In this town, he met thiefs, after some fights, a familiy took Oliver under his wing and Oliver for the first time learned to be loved and to loved. Charles Dickens, the author, lived in the 19th century. He knew early what poverty and work were. Oliver Twist is one of his most knowned book. This is it

I quote just a few mistakes : - in an unknown time, well known (instead of knowned) - is born (and not borned) - meant (and not meaned) - that he was here (and not were) - this story takes place - an hostile world compared to (instead of to compare to) I'm not sure that we can say " his long cry of a newborn"? perhaps "a newborn's long" cry is better, I don't know.
csand Posté(e) 30 mars 2006 Posté(e) 30 mars 2006 Here s my first summary. This text is an extract from Dickens' well known novel, Oliver Twist. As the subtitle explains, it describes the way Oliver Twist is born. Oliver Twist is born in a workhouse in a town and at a time which remain untold by the narrator as it would not bring any useful information to the reader. A parish surgeon and an old drunk woman helped his lonely mother to deliver her baby .It did not happen very well. The baby remained between life and death before being strong enough to breathe. After having heard his child cry, his mother asked for seeing him then she died. The young orphan was now ready to face the squalid and repulsive world as this difficult start has prepared him to struggle for his life and his survival.

The report takes care about several rights which are extracted from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The government uses that report for American policies and allows some countries to receive aids. Have a good evening adwices Teacher. This is it Errors to be corrected ! a few comments about the contents of your " summary" : -how do you know that Dickens knew what poverty was ( develop ...) - do you know anything about the thieves Oliver met in London ? and his adoptive family ? - a part of the story which wasn't dealt with in Polanski's film is Oliver's quest of identity ( an important part in Dickens'novel) ...... Remember speaking 5 minutes is a long time , so try to give as many details as you can . All the best

Do you know what a " workhouse " was ? and why do you say that giving the name of the town and the moment of O's birth wouldn't be useful to the reader ?

I thought that Dickens said that it wouldn't be very useful for the reader to know the place and the time Oliver was born because of this sentence : "inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader". I found on internet this definition for a workhouse : a house where the town poor are maintained at public expense, and provided with labor.
