It was written by journalist Richard Garner and was issued on July, 21st 2005. This article lays the stress on a program launched at Eltham Green, a British comprehensive school, in an attempt to curb truancy and give the pupils the will to go to school and work. Throughout the text, the journalist lists the different measures taken and their aims. He also focuses on the results they have brought : an increase in school attendance and a drop in the number of pupils excluded or sent to specific places when they behave badly. In a word, we can say that these measures have proved their efficiency. In an effort to arise the pupils' curiosity, interest and motivation, traditional subjects as History, Geography or Music have been replaced by projects that include more practical activities thanks to which the pupils « learn by doing », acquire know-hows and develop specific skills. Boredom is seen as a threat to the success of the pupils. Sports is also one of the central themes of this program whose aim is to channel the importance of a good health to the pupils. Moreover, sports develop many qualities, both physical and moral, as team-spirit and perseverance. The journalist concludes his article underlining one of the main purposes of this program, which is to help 1st year students adapt themselves to the working conditions of secondary schools. Indeed, a survey shows that a great part of the 1st-year pupils fail to get used to these working conditions and suffer from great difficulties to adjust themselves and this program is also bound to rescue them. In France, according to a survey of the Education Ministry, 5% of the pupils regularily skipped school in 2005 in secondary schools. We also consider that 150 000 pupils leave school each year with no qualification. Most of them lose faith in the schooling system, have no prospects in life and consider that school is not the place where they can build their future or get prepared to a profesional life. So they decide to leave it. I think that helping them build skills they'll be able to use later in life, as it is the case with that program depicted in the text, is one of the keys to solve this plague. Moreover, one of the aims of the law passed in 2005 is to fight against such inequalities and to allow all the pupils of the French schooling system reach success and achievement. Yet, we can wonder if that will be enough and efficient. I don't remember if we can use both "sport" and "sports+ verbe au singulier" in English for "le sport" Anyone knows? Once again well done ! I would say Sport is.../ "skipped school" : played truant ( truancy is the noun/ pupils who leave school because of the lack of interest , without any qualifications are called " drop-outs") In GREEN, I have underlined verbs which give the progression of the summary and link words which should be used by all of you... It was published in July 2005. It's entitled "The Comprehensive where attendance are improved and exclusions have decreased". The article deals with six projects which are proposed at Eltham Green. This projects want to make lessons more interesting at comprehensive schools. They replace subjects which are not included in "core subjects" ; it is the case of history, geography and technology. They learn to pupils another side of subjects which is more realistic. It is not only focused on learning lessons. Furthermore, the projects want pupils to have more chance on the first year of Secondary school. The journalist draws our attention to some projects. The first one is called "Roman Around". It consists on visiting local historic sites. Then, the article takes the case of music lessons which also develop business skills. Moreover, it mentions the new way to teach sport. Indeed, the project takes more attention about what the pupils can do and doesn't impose a sport. There is also a programme called "opening minds". Its purpose is to have a transition when the pupils are moved up and come to secondary school. According to the journalist, there are 30% of pupils who failed in their first year. In conclusion, we can say that the projects have positive results. Indeed, as the title pointed out there are more attendance and less exclusions. In my opinion, the projects of Eltham Green are a good idea. Indeed, it helps pupils to find interest in studying. The projects seem to take what pupils need into account. It doesn't consider learning only like lessons which must be known by heart. Link Words/ verbs... in green : well done, Lola ! Can you help me?- he says that pupils are enjoy it. - several traditional lessons has been abandonned Hi foufinson Pour la première erreur, tu confonds en fait deux formes du présent : le présent continu, qui se construit avec "be" conjugué+le verbe en "-ING" ( ex : "he is writing" ) et le présent simple qui se construit avec le verbe sans le "to" et qui prend un "s" à la troisième personne du singulier (ex : "he writes"). Pour la deuxième erreur, ton sujet est au pluriel mais tu lui associes "has" qui lui s'emploie avec un sujet au singulier

I don't understood all the text and I wish that I haven't make an misinterpretation. This text is an excerpt of the interview of the president of the USA and a journalist from Chicago Tribune. We can observe in this text that is Clarence Page who speaks more. George W. Bush is the first with speaking in this excerpt. He explains that there is a persistent poverty in Louisiana and that this poverty has roots in a history of racial discrimination witch cut off generations from the opportunity of America. The journalist answers him that what he had saying is true but she continues saying that poverty is too and especially a problem of class. Clarence Page notices that Americans are uncomfortable about race and even less comfortable talking about class. They dream of an utopian ideal, a class-free society but the journalist specify that this ideal isn’t the reality. Reality at the moment is what we can observed with Hurricane Katrina : Americans, black or white, who have money can leaving this horror ; but Americans who can’t have this money are obliged staying in this misery. All of them saw this misery on television and a recent pool found Americans expressed feelings of depression after new Orleans than they felt after September 11th because they are replaced in front of the reality. The journalist conclude this state of the fact saying that, in the event like Hurricane Katrina, American must approach them. In this dramatic situation, races and classes should not exist. She says a sentence which summarizes well what it should passed in this catastrophe : “ the greatest wealth comes not in the wallet, but in spirit” and we must remind “how vulnerable we are”. I think that what she says is true. In that terrible catastrophe, someone must give like he can (money, time…). Everybody must feel concerned.

It was written by a journalist, Richard Garner and the headline is eye-catching. The text is divided into two parts. The first paragraph summarizes the Eltham Green comprehensive school's projects. The journalist presents the great ideas of this new approach. He indicates the positive impact of pupils's comportements and progress. In this school, traditional lessons were replaced by differents projects for 11 and 12 years old pupils. thanks to this obligatory initiative, attendance made better, exclusions reduced, children's transgressions has fallen to zero and the school received compliments The second paragraph describes some of these projects such as "Roman Around","making the band", "sport" and "opening minds". The journalist's presentation seems to imply that pupils's concrete implications in their learning is better for their school advances. They have more interest, motivation when they can visite historic sites, learn music to prepare a concert or when they can choose an appropriate sport. When reading this article, we may compare with some french school initiatives like Freinet school or experimental college. In those establishments, students take part in the administraction's organisation, they can choose their lessons... In short, they are realy implicated in school's life. I have no idea about the results of those initiatives because I never read some studies about it. For next tuesday, I'll work on the text n°3 from Aix-marseille. This american emission deals with the relation between racial discrimination and poverty. It dates back to september 22, 2005. Firstly, I summarise the text and secondly I compare the american situation with the french one. This text can be divided into two parts. First of all, we can read a statement from the president of the U.S. George W. Bush. He wants to convey the idea that poverty and racial discrimination are the same. According to him, it's an historical problem for America. Next, we have an other point of view, the Clarence Page one, a journalist from the Chicago Tribune. He is agree with the fact that the black poverty has a history in racial discrimination, but he explains in her arguments that is not a problem for blacks only. He uses some exemples to illustrate her remarks: - poverty conserns a greater percentage of blaks in America, but not more black than white. -the problem is more important in cities like New Orleans. Espacially when they have to support the concequences of a disaster like the hurricane katrina. To conclude, the journalist suggests that the real problem today in America is not the race or ethnicity but income or opportunity. I think in France, poverty is more a social problem than a racial problem. Yet, the confusion can be made with recent expulsions we can see on television, because they concern espacially black people. To sum up, I'd say that like in America, french people reminde they have more in common than in separation when they have to support trouble.
