This is my summary for the text : Nobel peace prize citation.

The text proposed is issued from the Guardian dated October 12 2007. It relates that the 2007 Nobel peace prize is both decernated to Al Gore Jr, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change : this is to highlight their work and efforts to aware people on the climate evolution and danger.

During the two last decades het knowledge on the climate evolution has really changed. In the beginning of the 80's the expert suggested that the Human activity has impact on the environnement. Nobody really care. But in the recent studies most of the scientist and official, all around the wold, now affimate that the planet is in great danger thanks to Human activity. If we don't care we will soon face large face migrations, or worst war because of the competition for earth's resources.

Al Gore and the IPCC both used to work on these subjects, to make them more know by the whole population.

About the Nobel peace prize...

The Nobel peace prize has been awarded for the first time in 1901. It aim is to reward "the personnality who has the best contributed to the people rapprochement, to the suppession of permanent army, and to the propagation of progress toward peace." It awards people as different as Mère Theresa, Theodore Roosvelt, the organisation red Cross. Sometimes the nomination of a person or a committee creates discussion, for exemple when Theodore Roosvelt has been awarded in 1906 people criticisez the decision because he was a militarist.

Thus is the action of Al Gore and the IPCC in favor or peace?? Inderectly it is. In fact nowaday the climate problems is a threat, but people just wonder for the futur of their children : what the climat will be, wich resources for cars and electricity. But as enlight the articles it can create great conflict for the possession of eart's resource: what will be the countries reaction if they begun to be short of water. This can create great war within and outside coutries.

What can be undertaken to stop this climat evolution? This evolution and the climat warming is due to human activities. We can probably develop bio energy, bio agriculture, recycling : electrical cars, based on passiv energy (sun, wind...), passiv houses, bie agriculture.... But everybody has to make the effort and if we all agree that there is a danger, it is not natural in our culture to make such efforts in our daily life. Mentality still have to evoluate.

Well, of course you can join the group ...though I don't think this is much of a working group now . No work has been done for a long while .

Why don't you go on the BBC online site and find an article which you can comment on ? (identify it/ give a quick summary /comment on the topic/ give your opinion ....)

There are lots of examples if you want to read all the messages written here !

Make sure you practise your reading and your pronunciation as your exam is oral .

Hi everybody, I am back :

it is time for me to practice a little my written english. Though I wasn't inactive before : I listened BBC learning english or some others sites for prereader pupils (very interesting !), and I read some novels (pride and prejudice-Jane Austin, but not finished for the moment).

However, I found an article in the guardian pulblished on the 15th of february 2008 (the link is given above) about practical science lessons in schools and colleges. Then I present here a summary of this text following by a comment on the similitudes with french school.

The Royal Society wants to know the state of the practical science lessons in schools that's why it launched an investigation. The society's director of education explains that the state is reasonable but that it can be improved by better interesting pupils and by giving them explanations so as to pupils have a better understanding of the scientific concepts.

This consultation should point out what it is done well and what problems teachers face. Perhaps some practical works can't be done because of the lack of teacher's knowledges. It is a reason why the english government wants to recruit more scientists as teachers.

The purpose followed by the science academy is to lead more pupils to take GCSEs in physics, biology and chemistry, with the help of the governement.

We can notice with this text that the science teaching is a preoccupation for the english government as well as the french governement. In our country some measures were already taken thanks to the iniative of the nobel price George Charpak which found the site “la main à la pate”. This site is a great help to teach science at school. Moreover in the french program we can find the investigation method which is as close as possible from the method used by researchers.

To my mind, it is interesting to understand scientific concepts because it can be explain physical phenomenom of our environment. For example, physics explains why clothes are drying or why we can see a rainbow in the sky. But I think that others skills such as history help to understand the world but in another domain : where are we come from ? How the society such as we know it was built ...

In my opinion school teachers must give different skills to pupils so as to they understand all the facets of the world.
